About Cheryl Pass

Cheryl Pass Artist's Statement

For me, painting is about falling in love with the subject, absorbing the colors, the shapes, the way the light falls, and then being able to share that experience with others. Every painting has it's own challenges and that is part of the fun. Each has its own set of questions that beg to be answered and that is what I love to do....transcribe some scene, figures, or objects, in a unique way, in paint, for others to enjoy.

My background is this: Inspired by the surroundings of beautiful farmland while growing up in rural Ohio, surrounded by fine antiques and a local appreciation for fine art and artisans, I always knew I wanted to become a painter, to convey the beauty around us. I moved to different areas of the country once I was married and while raising my two children, which allowed me to visit museums and galleries across the country. Along the way, I studied with local college level art instructors in North Carolina and Ohio and became adept at various media including watercolor, acrylics and oils. Studying paintings of masters, artists both past and contemporary, via museums, galleries, art books and DVD's, is a life-long pursuit.

After moving to North Carolina I became an active member of the local art guild, serving as President and winning several purchase and merit awards. For a few years I designed Christmas ornaments for a local manufacturer that were distributed nationally. In 1991, I began a stationery business called Wild Hare based on my watercolor art. Wild Hare products were marketed nationally and established relationships with over one thousand retail stores. In 2001, I closed the business in order to focus my energies more completely on fine art for commissions and galleries.

I work from in a beautiful backyard studio connected to my home with the company of our dear dog, Bosley, and the blessing of great support from my family.
